Hi folks,
Today we discussed the idea of "What is Moving" in a bit more detail. We will be working with defining and measuring motion for the next several weeks as we get into Newton's Laws. We also did a lab where the students had to calculate the speed of a dart shot from a Nerf Gun (thank you Gray for letting us borrow them). I gave the students no instructions to tell them how to go about it, I just gave them the challenge to figure it out. Each team did a great job! Turns out, the fastest speed we found for a Nerf gun dart was about 65 miles per hour!
Homework for next week is to answer the following questions.
1. What is the difference between velocity and speed?
2. Give me an example of a velocity.
3. What two measurements does velocity combine into one measurement?
4. Are you moving right now? The answer is yes and no. Tell me why you can answer that question with a yes and a no.
5. If you are in a plane, and the flight attendant pours you a drink, why is he able to pour you a drink just like he was in your kitchen, even though you are moving at 450mph?
6. You are in a space capsule in the middle of space. You see another space capsule getting closer to you. Describe four ways the space capsules could be moving where this scenario could be seen. (We did this in class.)
7. A friend of yours just got a brand new remote controlled car for her birthday. She was wondering how fast it goes. You, with your amazing physics knowledge, just happen to know exactly what to tell her so that she can figure it out. Write a set of step by step instructions to tell your friend what she can do to find the speed of her car.
8. Does gravity pull on all things equally? Give me an example that explains your answer.
